Vegetarian Hot Honey “Pulled Pork” Sandwich

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 400g Portobello mushrooms, wiped clean and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • ½ cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 ½ tablespoons water
  • Salt and pepper
  • Sourdough bread, sliced
Red Cabbage Slaw (Optional)
  • 1/4 cup Eggless mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup red cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup rocket


  1. Heat the oil in a large skillet on medium heat. 
  2. Add the mushrooms and onions and stir frequently until the mushrooms lose their water and the onions become translucent and soft.
  3. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cook until the onions caramelize and the edges of the mushrooms begin to crisp up.
  4. Add BBQ sauce, BLACK MAMBA HOT HONEY and water to the pan and stir until the mushrooms are completely coated in the sauce. Bring the mixture to a boil on medium heat and then reduce the heat to a low simmer. Cook for 15 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce is thick and sticky.
  5. Serve the mushrooms on toasted sourdough bread with red cabbage slaw and rocket.
